In 2009, the Government of India (GoI) constituted the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), tasked with the provision of unique identity numbers to residents of India. UIDAI named this project Aadhaar (foundation in many Indian languages). The uniqueness of the identity was to be guaranteed by biometric identification. Individuals had to enrol themselves in Aadhaar by providing their biometrics (10 fingerprints, iris scans, photographs) and demographic information.
